The Book Freedom in the Workplace, by Samuel Cook, published in 2005, chronicles the historic clash between free enterprise and compulsory unionism. The book is a full supporter of the merit shop philosophy and highlights, among its most powerful inclusions, the full text of a 1954 letter titled “Why Don’t You Join ABC?” written by John Trimmer, then Executive Vice President of ABC. Its presence in this book is a testament to our lasting role in shaping the construction industry.
Trimmer’s letter made the case that ABC was open to all—regardless of race, creed, or union status—and that membership meant strength in numbers. He explained how ABC supported its members with guidance on navigating government hurdles, addressing technical issues, overcoming labor challenges, and combating unfair political schemes. The value was both practical and financial: help from peers often saved members real dollars. In 1954, annual dues for ABC membership were: Contractors – $50, Subcontractors – $25, Suppliers & Associates – $10.
Seventy years later, that same call to join a community of builders still resonates. ABC remains committed to supporting contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and associates with the strength of unity, the merit shop philosophy, and a tradition of service that continues to shape the future of construction.
