ABC Institute Director of Education Alberto Altamiranda recently reflected on an important workforce development question: Are young people being shown all the pathways available after high school? While visiting the Palm Beach Atlantic University area, he observed students preparing for careers inside the university while skilled craft professionals were building the campus around them.
Altamiranda emphasized that the choice is not college versus construction, but creating multiple pathways to prosperity. Registered apprenticeships allow participants to earn a paycheck while receiving technical education and developing real-world skills for valuable careers. With construction continuing to face a significant workforce shortage, he argues that educators must help young people understand that traditional college and skilled-trades education can both build successful futures.
