Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recently highlighted three significant developments affecting the construction industry: record-low layoffs amid shifting labor demand, technological advances in jobsite safety, and bipartisan legislation to streamline federal permitting.
Construction layoffs fell to 99,000 in August, the lowest monthly figure since federal tracking began in 2000. Meanwhile, job openings declined to 251,000, reflecting uneven demand and persistent shortages in specialized trades.
ABC’s sixth annual construction technology report examines how contractors use technology, data, and collaboration to improve worker safety and jobsite performance. The report highlights innovation as an increasingly important component of construction operations.
ABC also endorsed the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 and urged Senate passage. The legislation would streamline environmental reviews, establish clearer permitting timelines, and reduce delays affecting housing and infrastructure projects.
These developments underscore ABC’s ongoing commitment to advocating for the construction industry, strengthening workforce opportunities, and helping contractors succeed. At both the national and local levels, ABC continues fighting for its members by promoting policies, resources, and initiatives that protect their interests and advance the merit shop philosophy.
