ABC Study Highlights Political Influence of Nonunion Construction Workforce
ABC released a new Harris Poll study showing that nonunion construction workers were a major force behind President Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory and could play a critical role in the 2026 midterms. Conducted in six battleground states, the survey found that nonunion skilled trades workers supported Trump at significantly higher rates than union workers, while comprising 76% to 98% of the construction workforce electorate.
ABC President and CEO Michael Bellaman said the findings demonstrate the growing political influence of the merit shop workforce and warned against policies favoring union-only project labor agreements.
The study also found skilled trades workers oppose union-preference federal contracting policies by nearly a 2-to-1 margin, supporting fair and open competition in federally funded construction projects.
